Examples include a severe toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or crown that causes pain, or facial swelling with fever. If you have a severe toothache, gently rinse your mouth with warm water and try flossing around the tooth to remove any trapped food. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label, but do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.
